Pancoast's Syndrome
نویسنده
چکیده
Ipsilateral invasion of the cervical sympathetic plexus, leading to Horner's syndrome (miosis, enophthalmos, ptosis) in 14-50% of patients [2] . Ipsilateral reflex sympathetic dystrophy in the arm, with enhanced sensitivity to touch, and skin changes. Shoulder and arm pain (from the brachial plexus invasion C8-T1) with wasting of the intrinsic hand muscles and paraesthesiae in the medial side of the arm. Less commonly, unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy producing unilateral vocal cord paralysis (hoarse voice ± bovine cough), and/or phrenic nerve involvement. Arm oedema secondary to the compression of blood vessels. Superior vena cava obstruction, with facial swelling, difficulty breathing and a flushed appearance.

Malignant tumours in the apices of the lungs, especially bronchogenic carcinoma (Pancoast tumours), are the most common cause of Pancoast' syndrome which presents with shoulder or arm pain radiating along the medial aspect of forearm and weakness of small muscles of hand with wasting of hypothenar eminence due to neoplastic involvement of C8 and T1 and T2 nerve roots of brachial plexus. There a...

Four patients with pancoast's syndrome had burning pain in the axilla and abnormal sensation in the intercostobrachial nerve territory. The intercostobrachial nerve is the first component of the brachial plexus to be invaded by lung tumours.

Pancoast’s syndrome consists of pain in the arm and shoulder, atrophy of hand muscles, and Homer’s syndrome [1]. The initial symptom of Pancoast’s syndrome generally is pain in the shoulder. In some patients, only partial characteristics could be observed. It occurs mainly in patients with a superior pulmonary sulcus tumor invading the lower brachial plexus roots and the cervicothoracic sympath...
